Using Word Processors
(By Sarah Speed)
Classroom activities (which use a word processor / desktop publishing
package):
| Genre of Text |
Related Activities (using a WP or DTP
package) |
| REPORTS |
- Write Newspaper Articles (producing the
work in columns and creating boxes for pictures,
using appropriate fonts, sizes and styles) |
| RECOUNTS |
- Write an entry for a diary.
- Write a recount of experiment which you may
have carried out in the classrooms (using tables
and grids for results / data) |
| PERSUASION |
- Write a letter. Some software might have a
wizard which creates a letter for the children,
so that they just have to type in their
information in the correct spaces. |
| STORIES |
- Write a number of different kinds of
stories, e.g. anecdotes, fables, myths and
legends, detective stories, adventures, romances.
- Create a class story book. |
| PROCEDURES |
- Write recipes or instructions, using bullet
points / tables and making sure that they are set
our clearly. |
| EXPLANATIONS |
- Describe how something works (e.g. a
project which they might have made in Design and
Technology). The text will need to be set out in
a logical order (perhaps sequenced) |
| DISCUSSION |
Children can discuss issues which might
affect them (e.g. local / school issues). and
their work should be presented clearly, using
appropriate vocabulary. |
While writing these kinds
of texts, children might want to include graphics (where
appropriate) to improve the presentation of their work
(thus boosting confidence).
When they have finished writing their
texts, children's work can be saved on a floppy disk, a
Zip disk, a writeable CD-ROM, a network, or the hard drive (depending on the facilities at your school) to make
sure that it doesn't go missing. While they are writing,
also encourage them to back up their work
regularly - there is nothing more frustrating
than spending a long time typing lots of information and
losing it in a matter of seconds!!
