Using Word Processors
(By Sarah Speed)
Word processing is a
necessary skill for children to learn. Children who find
writing difficult can use a word processor as a way of
expressing themselves and producing a variety of writing
styles.
Here are a number of
reasons why children should use ICT (Information and
Communications Technology) in English:
Children can can
use ICT to develop their understanding of how
writing works.
The high quality
of presentation which ICT offers, can motivate
children a great deal.
ICT allows pupils
to reflect on what they have written and to
change it easily. This is not so easy when
writing with a pen and paper.
Children can write
for longer periods with ICT.
Spell-checkers
help children to develop their own spelling
strategies and thesauruses make children more
aware of words which have similar meanings.
ICT can help
pupils to write in groups.
Talking word
processors help children to identify spelling
transcription errors in their writing. They also
help those pupils who might have difficulty with
reading.
ICT gives pupils
immediate access to a vast quantity and variety
of information.
