Searching the Internet - Part 1
(by Sally Pearce)
Computers allow children
the opportunities to search through vast quantities of
information rapidly. They also have the advantage that
this information might be far beyond the scale normally
found in school reference resources.
Searching can be carried
out on CD-ROMs and the World Wide Web:
CD-ROMs -
Different CD-ROMs have different techniques for
locating information. There might be an index or
a contents page, or a search facility which
allows children to find particular key words or
phrases.
World Wide Web -
The web has 200-300 million available documents,
and this amount doubles every 6-12 months. To
search through all of this information, children
will need to use a search engine. The table below
provides links to the major search engines on the
internet:
Here are some useful tips
for searching the WWW:
Use more than one or two key
words to search
Use nouns and objects as key
words
Combine key words into phrases
Use descriptive, specific words,
e.g. "Ferrari" instead of "sports
cars".
