Finding out about Foxes

Age Range: 7 to 11

Major Objective - The student will understand facts about foxes so that they can write acrostic poems and pattern reports.

Materials - Internet access.

Books - Flossie and the Fox, Dr. DeSoto, Trill the Fox Cub

Time Required - Two 1-hour sessions

Activities and Procedures - The student will be reading books about foxes. They will use the internet to find facts about foxes. After finding the information they will make a data bank about foxes using these headings: "Eats", "Has", "Does".

The students will use this information in the following pattern report:

The most interesting thing about _________________________________
is __________________________________________________________.
They eat _____________________________________________________.
They live _____________________________________________________.
They have ____________________________________________________.
But the most interesting thing about ________________________________ is that they ____________________________________________________.

The students will also make an acrostic poem using the letters FOX.

Follow-Up / Extension - The students could make a "Fact or Fiction" Book. On one page make a statement and the next page tell whether the statement is fact or fiction and why. For example, FACT OR FICTION? FACT There are several kinds of foxes. Foxes include the Arctic Fox, Grey Fox, Red Fox.
