Alliteration
Subject: Literacy
(This idea was contributed by Jennifer Speculand)
Age Range: 5 to 11

After your super idea to teach Onomatopoeia, I thought I'd pass on my idea for Alliteration in our Speech and Drama classes.

The class forms a circle and we throw a soft ball (Koosh ball is best!) saying our name and something we like beginning with the same sound. eg. I say "I'm Mrs Speculand and I like Smarties!!!!"

Then I give each child a piece of scrap paper and they can are told to tear it up and drop it on the floor. Some say they have made a mess, some say it's rubbish and someone will say it's LITTER.

Then I ask the sound of the first letter of the alphabet - that's "A" as in apple (not the letter "A" as in ape)

Then I ask where the train stops to pick up passengers - answer "at the station!"

a - litter - ation!

I hope your teachers find the idea as much fun as my pupils - even the 5 year olds remember this big 3 syllable word.
