Keeping Records

Contributed by:
A Visitor
Age Range: Early Years

The nature of early years learning means that much of the learning recorded is spontaneous.

I keep records of children on hand in my in tray, at all times in checklist format. I photocopy the class list and make columns to suit each criteria in literacy and numeracy and keep it on my desk ready to date and annotate at any time throughout the day. I begin this from day one to make sure I have an accurate idea of the children's level of development in the first month.

I review this on a weekly basis to plan for the children who need extra help. It is a ready resource and quick reference for specialist teachers, parents and head teachers.
