Early Years - Literacy

  • Snowman Alphabet - Match upper and lower case letters using this fun technique.
  • Bob the Word Builder - Build up words, like Bob the Builder does, with this fabulous idea!
  • Alphabet Frieze PDF File - A useful PDF which can be used to decorate your classroom, to support children's knowledge of the alphabet. Contributed by Hafeezud Din.
  • Alphabet Presentation (Upper Case) Powerpoint Presentation - Explore the alphabet (upper case letters) with this Powerpoint presentation. Slides could also be printed and used as practical equipment. Contributed by Geethanjeli Ganesan.
  • Alphabet Presentation (Lower Case) Powerpoint Presentation - As above, but in lower case. Contributed by Geethanjeli Ganesan.
  • Alphabet Matching Smart Notebook file - Match the pictures to their initial letters in this Smart Notebook file. Contributed by Lynn Medland.
  • Alphabet Bear Charlie - An excellent activity involving phonics reinforcement and cuddly teddy bears!
  • Dogs Trust Alphabet PDF File - A set of alphabet poster with a dog theme!
  • Making a Sandwich - A fun way of encouraging children to think about the importance of clear instructions.
  • Rhyming Powerpoint Presentation - Sarah Scott has made this Powerpoint presentation, which can be used to make silly rhyming sentences (e.g. the bat flew over the cat).
  • Learning Letters - A fun way of learning the different letters of the alphabet.
  • Remembering Letters - Help children to remember the letters of the alphabet, using this craft activity.
  • Initial Sounds Powerpoint Presentation - A wonderful interactive Powerpoint presentation (1.3Mb), which teaches children about initial sounds. Contributed by Tina Godden.

  • Magic Bag - Help children to learn their initial sounds by using a magic bag.
  • Name the Sounds Excel Spreadsheet - An Excel worksheet to assess children's ability to name sounds (linked to the Jolly Phonics scheme). Children have to say the sound of each lower case letter (e.g s= 'sssss'), but say the name of each capital letter (grown up style!). Contributed by Jane Dovey.
