Bob the Word Builder
Subject: Early Years
(This idea was contributed by Sarah Whyman)
Age Range: Early Years

This can be a fun and encouraging way for children to start building words from letter sounds.

Tell the children they are going to take turns being Bob the Builder (I use a plastic yellow builders' hat).

Have each letter of the alphabet laminated on A4 paper (building blocks) and allow Bob the Builder to build words using the letters. This can be used for numerous literacy lessons such as rhyming strings in which each child can have a turn substituting (or 'building') the first letter.
