Year 5 have to do talking textiles so we chose the story of Romulus and Remus, linking to our history.
First we looked at tapestries telling stories, the Marcia Williams books, the bayeux tapestry and greek pots, then we read them the story and discussed the scenes and then they had to quickly sketch one of the scences from the story.
We teachers divided the story into enough scenes for every pair of children in our year and then each pair had to draw their scene on A3 paper and label each bit with what materials they were going to use.
We'd brainstormed possible materials at the beginning of the topic. They had to provide all the stuff they needed.
When the A3 design was fine and annotated, they drew on calico (50x75cm) and then cut out and laid out their materials, but did not start to stick until they were happy that they had the right materials.
After sticking, each scene was backed with card and the edges stuck over and they were displayed either in the classrooms or in the main hall. Children wrote headings for each scene to put under each picture to help those who did not know the story to read the finished work.
