Symmetrical Butterflies
Subject: Art
(This idea was contributed by Quinn)
Age Range: 5 to 11

We were doing a butterfly unit, and I needed a Maths idea.

You mix corn syrup and liquid water colour together.  I used yellow, blue and red so that the children could mix colors to come up with new shades.

You fold a piece of construction paper in half.  The children then use eye droppers to put the paint on one half of the paper.  In this case we did 1/2 of the butterfly.

The children then fold their paper over and press gently.

When they unfold their paper, they are pleasantly surprised to find a beautiful butterfly.
