Empty Space Pictures

Contributed by:
Karla Crise
Age Range: 5 to 11

1) Put a hole into a piece of coloured paper. Don't just cut out any old hole though - make the hole into a shape (I usually trace cookie cutters).

2) Then give each of the children a sheet of paper with a hole in it and ask them to decorate the paper (by colouring it, or by drawing a picture on it).  It is often amazing to see how they will incorporate the "empty space" into their pictures.

I have also had the children tape a photograph of themselves to the back, after colouring their picture, so that their project serves as "matting" before framing their artwork.

This project can easily be incorporated into the holidays (hearts for Valentine's Day, crosses for Easter, etc.).
