Animal Areas

Age Range: 7 - 11

Animal Areas

These resources challenge children to find the area of some unusual shapes. They could be used in a number of ways in the classroom:

  • Ask pupils to find the total area of each animal by counting the squares.
  • Challenge children to find the area of each shape that is covered by each colour and then calculate the total area.
  • Find out the perimeter of each shape.
  • Ask the children to use the blank grid to make their own animal pictures... they could then ask a friend to work out the area / perimeter of their animal. Pupils could also use half-squares (with diagonal lines) in their animal pictures.
